Alpacas originate from South America and have been bred for their fleece for over 6000 years. Once to provide clothing for the rich, over time conditions for alpacas diminished and so did the quality of the fleece.
In the last 50 years or so, alpacas have emerged as a thriving industry once again. As a result of sophisticated breeding programmes and husbandry, alpacas provide a luxurious fiber which can be turned into textiles for a sustainable market.
The luscious softness of alpaca is making a comeback and is a choice for designers, and once again is fit for Royalty as Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton has modelled recently.
